PoGO PvP
What is This?
This page is full of information specifically for #PokemonGO. It contains information on What Makes a Good PvP Pokemon, and details about the various formats. Similar to mainline #Pokemon #Games PvP is split into different formats:
- Great Ball (<1500cp)
- Ultra Ball (<2500cp)
- Mater Ball (No Limit)
Within each of these three formats there are various Cups that change the rulesets. The different cups provide a slightly shifting meta over the course of the PvP Season.
While there are three formats; Great Ball League is by far the most competitive and used in Pokemon Regional & World Championship matches. All info below is for the GBL.
There are various updates for PvP in the new season Memories in Motion. You can also see the video below for a more detailed deep dive.
What Makes a Good PvP Pokemon
While IVs don't make a large difference in Raiding or Attacking Gyms, they are extremely important when it comes to PvP. Getting the right IV spread can lead to some serious bulk and makes the difference between winning or losing a match.
The video below coves stats in general but you can use PvPIVs to check the best IV spreads.
Now that you understand the IVs, lets talk about the best pokemon in PvP. Unfortunately not all pokemon are created equally. That being said some pokemon are naturally better in specific formats and some aren't good at all. You can use PvPPoke to check the rankings and best moves for a pokemon across the different formats.
You can also use this Quizlet about PoGO move counts to test your knowledge.
Great Ball League
As mentioned above the Great Ball League requires pokemon to have 1500 or less cp to compete. While that sounds simple there are additional factors that go into the grand scheme that can help net you key wins and come out on top of unfavorable matchups.
Shadow Pokemon
Similar to PvE shadow pokemon can be extremely useful due to the 20% increased attack. However, unlike Raiding and Attacking Gyms the 20% reduced defense isn't always worth the trade due to the low cp of your pokemon. Without going to deep, 20% of 3000 is 600, where as 20% of 1500 is 300. Meaning, each point matters a lot more when it comes to lower numbers in both defense and attack stats. Below is a video about the best shadow pokemon in GBL.
Creating a Good Team
Creating a good team for PvP is founded on a couple steps:
- Ensuring good type coverage for attacks and good defensive resistances; You can use PvPPoke's Team Builder to check your potential matchups.
- Picking a strong lead, safe swap, and closer; You can adjust the "sort by" on PvPPoke's Rankings to filter to each of these roles.
- Knowing you're Pokemon's weaknesses and super effective type matchups. You can use the weakness chart below.
The chart below only shows single type matchups, but you can see the dual-type weakness chart here for a more detailed breakdown. Unlike the mainline #Pokemon #Games we don't have and "type immunities" in #PokemonGO.

While defenses are only part of the equation, it's also super important to make sure you're using the best fast and charged attacks on your team. This is also covered in the PvPPoke Rankings, but you can also see the infographic below for a more digestible format.
